Hi Guys
I have a 1988 bayliner Capri with a 350 chev in it and want to fit a heat exchanger, as I'm not familiar with heat exchangers I'm presuming the pump in the leg cools the manifold only and the heat exchanger looks after the engine. Can some one advise if this is correct and any tips when fitting and purchasing one " what size tank is required " as I've seen a few on EBay for sale .

Thank you in advance

several companies make add on exchangers. It would take a large exchanger and a larger pump to cool the manifolds. Your best bet is the small exchanger and seawater cooled manifolds.

Be sure to check on the cost of all parts. The exchanger is only part of the project. You may find the math does not work out with the value of the boat.

First of all you haven't seen my boat and its not for sale nor am I concerned what you "think" it may be worth, I'm looking for advice on a heat exchanger and prepared to part with $$ for the right product. I'm hoping someone can give me some advice on what to look for or need to be aware off.

Thank you in advance

Google "San Juan Engineering".

Most only cool the block so its considered a half system. In order to cool the manifolds as well, the heat exchanger needs to be considerably larger. Your drive mounted raw water pump may or may not have enough flow. Usually best to have an engine mounted raw water pump.

If your boat has ever been in salt water before, its too late to do the closed cooling.

One thing you might want to consider. Most companies don't recommend installing a closed cooling system on an engine over 1 year old or 125 hours of use. As the anti freeze loosens the rust and corrosion in the block, it can actually plug up the coolant side of the heat exchanger, and that side can't be taken apart and cleaned out.
I have installed them on older engines, have had about a 50% success rate.

I had contacted San Juan Engineering when thinking about putting one on a 1 yr old 70 hour engine that had been used in salt water. They advised me against doing it.

Yeah. In 2006, the same guy at San Juan told me my "never in salt" 97 454 with 120hrs would be "ok" with their system on it.

I still took extraordinary steps to clear out the rust, sand and any other debris in the block and manifolds before I installed the engine....

So far it has been fine..... All bets are probably off though if it's been in salt

Thanks guys for your positive feed back and will give the heat exchanger a miss on this motor ;)

I was not running down the boat. From your wording I thought you might be looking at just the exchanger. If you had said "KIT" I would not have reminded you to check the cost of all the special hoses and plumbing. When I do answer a question I assume the OP would like every aspect answered. I did also assume that you were wanting to protect a new engine. I guess I was wrong. O well as Ralph stated " I tried".
