Ok...I'm heading into my 5th boating season with my Force '90/90hp and damn...this thing has never stopped or bagged it on me. I (finally) launched the boat this past week after an (extraordinary long) seasonal storage...dropped the engine down after launching, hit the choke and the starter...and away she went. I just had to sit back and smile about this..given the 'Force rap' so often yapped about amongst some boaters.:confused::)
I took it out again this morning for a little hoot and it didn't miss a beat.
I just don't get the naysayers of this motor...and I'm just sharing my positive experience with these wonderfully simple (and U.S built) motors.
It was yet another great day and hope everyone has the same fortunate and successful boating that this motor has given us.
All Good

I don't naysay them. They are what they are-basic. Basic is not bad.

They got their rap from being standard engines on less expensive boats. They were typically sold to new owners that were clueless regarding maintenance.

Respectfully...I wasn't necessarily identifying the negative Force yodelling with you DJ.
It mostly a positive statement about my experience with this motor so far and in addition a lot of that positive experience has come from the input and info from some the first rate Force experts on this forum.:)

Other than difficulty finding some of the parts, I've had good luck as well. I just got mine running after 8 years of storage and it started right up. I did have to clean the carbs and buy a new coil but it's up and running fine.

I bought a used 125HP 5 years ago for $250. Rings and pistons were worn out. Replaced the rings and pistons and upgraded the ignition system. I have around $900 in it including the purchase price. It's been running great. Easy to work on. Have to rely on the internet to get parts, but that's OK. My neighbor just bought a new Honda 75HP 4-stroke last year for around $7000. He's already spent over $400 in maintenance/repairs on it at the dealership where he bought it. I don't have any complaints.

Twenty or so years ago when I stepped up from my Chrysler 55 to a Chrysler 90, I didn't know anything. (Thought I did though LOL)

I spent the whole summer trying to get that 90 to run correctly: I bought it as a running engine but every time I would take it out it would either stop running for apparently no reason, or melt a piston. Me, being too stupid, determined, and pig-headed to give up, after three pistons in the same cylinder melted, finally stumbled onto the multiple problems and corrected them. Unfortunately--or fortunately because I got a good deal on a new block, $325-- the old block needed replacement or reboring. I did port work on it so it produces a true 90 at the prop. I still have that engine and it still runs like a champ. I trust it to take me there and back.

I will admit that I am constantly tinkering with my engines and when I get another one, I automatically assume that anything that can be out of adjustment IS out of adjustment, and any maintenance/replaceable items need to be replaced. I am at the point now where, barring something drastic happening, none of my Chrysler or Force engines will ever leave me on the water. Oh, I did snap a prop shaft once, but my trusty 25 dollar Chrysler 8HP kicker got me back to the dock.

The thing is: Once you understand and LISTEN to the engine, it tells you what it needs long before it breaks. And most repairs are so simple that a child could do them.

I am connected with all my engines, and after a rebuild I always get that shiver the first time it starts. However, what I most enjoy is starting the engine on the first crank at the dock while the guy next to me with the premium brand engine cranks on and on in a futile effort to get on the water. Gloat, gloat!

Re: I'm still lovin' this motor!!

I've stated this before but I bought my boat and motor believing I would have to replace that junky, antique, 1966, 50hp Chrysler outboard. I was really only interested in the boat and trailer. When I did the test run with it, I was amazed at how well it ran. Well, 3 seasons and 100's of engine hours later, it still runs excellant. I've had to do basic maintenance and that's it. Every time I launch the boat, people compliment the "old classic". Other people launching new, expensive speedboats don't seem to recieve any special notice or attention. Don't get me wrong, those are nice boats and I understand that most people don't have the patience, skill or desire to work on old stuff. I just feel good when my $800 investment is sitting next to a $30,000 ski boat and the little Dorsett with that old Chrysler gets all the attention. Plus, this is the most important point for me, it's paid for!
