i have read that my 98 9.9 fourstroke doesnt have a choke
is there a compaitble carburetor that came with a choke?

its hard to start unless the idle screw is ran in there
im thinking a choke would help

there is something electric atop the carburetor im thinking its a solenoid of some kind for the carburetor and possibly an electric choke..
does anyone know what this is?

thanks for your replies!

You likely have some kind of fuel enrichener, instead of a traditional choke.

On my old Italian Motorcycle (or was it my British M/C?) they had a tickler instead of a choke. A tickler was a button that would submerge the carb float, flooding the carb. This was used for all cold starts.

That little electric part is the automatic fuel enrichener. It controls an additional fuel passage to remain open allowing a richer mixture for starting the motor (sort of like a choke). The coil is energized once the charging system is operating/started and begins to close off that passage.

Cold start problems often indicate the carb needs a very thorough cleaning.

I have been told by my favorite dealership that they do not sell an automatic fuel enrichener for this motor anymore. Tell you what we had a heavy frost thursday night, friday night it started on the second pull and was idled up and ready to go, but it ran for about three minutes and died. I let it cool off and get cold again, and two hours later it started cold on the first pull. Two or three minutes later it died. Im going to grab a carb kit but I have to work all weekend.

my idea is that when its cold the coil in the enricher is contracting and choking the carburetor as it should, but as soon as it begins to warm the choke opens too fast or suddenly and it stalls the motor because its not warm enough to handle the leaner mixture having more air...

Dirty fuel passages will cause the idle mixture to be lean.

While rebuilding/cleaning your carb, be sure to drill & remove the plug covering the idle mixture jet. These passages are VERY small, even the least bit of crud left in the carb and the idle will give you problems.

Make sure the accelerator pump is replaced, a poor pump shot will significantly cause a throttle bog on acceleration.

Re: im thinking a choke would help

the website above says that the part number 827473T which is a my 9.9 "starter set" or "enricher valve" is no longer avaliable..

even though a carb kit and cleaning will probably do it, what happens if this is what im in need of?

Re: im thinking a choke would help

It does not 'click'.

It is a slow heater coil that activates a small wax motor to move the pin/needle that opens passage allowing air to flow instead of pulling fuel from the bowl.

It takes a minute, allowing the motor a richened mixture during this warm up time.

If it has continuity when checked with an Ohm's meter then it is most probably good.

thank you!

tell you what this motor will start on the first pull when theres frost on the cowl.. it is reallllly cold and starts every morning when i get home from work,

it just dies as soon as it gets warm?

ill fumble with the enricher and put a kit in the carb

Re: im thinking a choke would help

I suspect that the idle passages are dirty, when cold the enrichener is passing fuel for the engine to run but once warmed up and the enrichener closes there is not enough fuel thru the idle to run and it dies.

Be sure it remove the plug covering the idle mixture screw, turn it in, counting the turns until gently seated so that once finished cleaning you can return it to the same position.

There are a few VERY small fuel passages drilled down thru the topside of the carb throat, be SURE these are clean and clear. II had had to use a very thin sewing needle to rod the crud from these, sometimes the carb cleaner chemicals are not enough. Be careful not to enlarge these holes!
