Re: I'm trying to find out info on this 1950's smaller merc Help
The second number in your list (1060772) is the serial number. The other numbers are casting numbers and don't mean much. The serial dates it at about 1957, so it could be a Mark 10. The only smaller motor they made at that time was the Mark 6. Is the motor a "glide angle" motor, by which it would mean the motor looks like it is leaning forward all the time. Are there any trademark names stamped in the motor block? Anything like "Rocket", "Super-Hurricane" or "Comet"? Can you get a number off the front of the carb? Might be AJ-XX or KA-XX depending on the motor.
If the motor spins all the way around for reverse AND it has a fuel pump (not gravity feed) fuel system, then it's likely a Mark 6. If it has a full gearshift in the tiller, then it's either a Mark 10 or Mark 28. A Mark 6 has a recoil that engages a small gear incorporated into the flywheel nut, whereas the Mark 10/28 have a notched basket on top of the flywheel that is engaged by the recoil.
Lots of things to look for to differentiate what you've got... Give us some more info!
- Scott
