There is a good chance, she is going to be detained and the case will be turned over to INS

She is probably going to have to work on her visa before she can work on naturalization.

She should have been working on getting her visa extended before now. She will have to leave the country one way or another.

Like Ken, I'm not up on the U.S visa stuff. However, to my recollection in Canada what you have to do is leave the country to re-apply if the visa has lapsed (maybe if it hasn't as well?). ie: you can't re-apply from within the country.
What this does for immigrants here is they go down to any U.S border point (ie: Buffalo, Detroit, Blaine, etc) and apply from the 'other side'....then come back and await the new visa status results. :)
I don't know the full backstory on this but anyone who doesn't follow the rules pretty closely might find themselves on a plane back 'home' from whence they came. I think its often human nature to put things off..but this is not the best task to put off.;)
What is her original country of origin?

visas are not the easiest thing to deal with especially as some things dont make sense like....you must NOT be in the usa when applying for a visa BUT you must have a usa address for the forms to be sent to (hmmmmm). Other things like "we thank you for your letter and we will respond in a timely manner of 300 to 365 days"

being a good worker is not always a good thing unless you either have a very skilled job that a company requires or a very unskilled job that no one else wants to do. Any other job will be considered as taking a job from a american worker.

This is going to sound odd but a good person to ask for help is the senator for the state you are in. When i battled for over 3 months concerning my green card a senators helper fixed that in under 3 hours (bless that colledge kid who ever it was). I also found that a supreme court judge can have a computer error fixed at ss in under 5 mins.

with out $150k value or a sponsor then a extension to the permit might be the best that can be done in a short time period.
