Impeachment

There seems to be a growing interest in impeaching Bush and Cheney for "high crimes and misdemeanors". What actually constitutes "high crimes and misdemeanors" is not cut and dried. Gerald Ford said "An impeachable offense is whatever a majority of the House of Representatives considers it to be at a given moment in history."

Wikipedia says "The charge of high crimes and misdemeanours covers allegations of misconduct that do not fall under a more clearly defined impeachable offence; e.g., high treason." And "A high crime is one which seeks the overthrow of the country, which gives aid or comfort to its enemies, or which injures the country to the profit of an individual or group. In democracies and similar societies it also includes crimes which attempt to alter the outcome of elections."

Nixon quit and avoided a for real slam dunk impeachment, K. Starr spent $44 million trying to convict Clinton for lying about a bl****b from "that woman" and he was eventually found innocent. After 5+ years of "whitewatergate" investigations and 1 of Lewinsky, nothing was found that warranted trial or conviction. I don't think Bush and/or Cheney would do so well.

Hopefully, now that power has slightly shifted, investigative committees will be formed and the many questions that have arisen from the actions of the Republican Administration will be at least partly answered. "Which injures the country to the profit of an individual or group" sounds interesting, as does "crimes which attempt to alter the outcome of elections". Maybe with Libby's trial, lying about WMDs and all the ramifications of that will become relevant.

Sam, I wouldn't worry too much about those clowns impeaching the president or VP. They first need to build a more solid trail of BS for the alNYTimes to pursue, and that isn't likely with the constitution blocking them as it does.
I would be more concerned with their efforts in propaganda, given the comming-outy party they threw for hanoi jane and crew last weekend.
They really cannot afford victory in Iraq, and they seem to be getting frantic and desperate.

The Democrats should be looking real close at the “gives aid or comfort to its enemies” part as that is what they have been doing for the last year or so.

And you want to call Bush a liar? This could quite possibly be the most inaccurate, irresponsible post ever.

IF the President lied about the issues that put us in Iraq there was ample opportunity for those of courage to speak their minds and offer counter arguments.

I do not feel that this president has lead our nation very well but I do NOT see any grounds for impeachment and to go down that road will only create more problems than it could possibly hope to solve.

Re: Impeachment

Whether Bush deserves it or not is irrelevant. It would just polarize the country instead of uniting, which is what we need more now that we are in this ill begotten war.
History will deal with Bush and his buddies. We should try to deal with our more pressing problems.

I think congress and senate will keep it on the back burner discovering what they can, then if this offensive fails, proceed.

That is a felony. We don't alow to felons to vote or own firearms.

There is a fine line between impeachment and witch hunt.

It never ceases to amaze me at how short peoples memories are.

Before we went to Iraq, we had the confidence (overwhelming) of the Senate and House, not to mention the UN.

Now, everyone wnats to "twist it" (Hillary) to their convenience.

Guess what? War ain't convenient. We finish it or be forever held as cowards.
I think we, as a nation, led by the media, are on the trail of the latter.

Re: Impeachment

Somewhere along the way the liberals of this country lost the perspective that we are all on the same team. the tallk of impeachment is simply a power play. they will not get serious about that until election time comes. then the trashing, with help of an eager media, of the evil repubilcans will begin, with Hillary looking down her nose.

If GWB is guilty of anything it is sticking ot his convictions and being bold enough to take action when the UN couldn't get past its own corruption.

All the charges, just like the Plame affair, Tom Delay, and a host of other policitally motivated stunts, clearly put democratic power above the interests of our nation.

We need balance in this country (need both parties and the push and pull of differing agendas), but we all have to realize the arguing stops when we leave the borders.

It doesn't take a brain surgeon to know we can win in Iraq. It also doesn't take a brain surgeon to figure out that winning is better than losing. It also doesn't take a brain surgeon to figure out that pulling out with less than success, is a failure in the eyes of our enemies.

BTW, John Kerry is a disgusting piece of Shiite. If there is any role model for the example above it is him.

Re: Impeachment

I did this link on another thread when it really belongs here... forgive me for the double post. :p

For many in the Senate, they were for a surge of troops in Iraq before they were against it.
"We don't have enough troops in Iraq," Sen. John Kerry, Massachusetts Democrat, said in 2005.
In 2004, he told NBC's Tim Russert some things he believes "very deeply."
"Number one, we cannot fail," Mr. Kerry said. "I've said that many times. And if it requires more troops in order to create the stability that eliminates the chaos, that can provide the groundwork for other countries, that's what we have to do."
He no longer believes that now. He is among at least a dozen Democratic senators who in the past have called for more troops in Iraq but now support a resolution condemning President Bush's plan to do just that. Many Republicans who voted for the war now plan to support a no-confidence resolution, including Sen. Chuck Hagel of Nebraska, who in the past had warned that the war would be a long, tough slog and that Americans should "speak with one voice."

For those of you that hate your President for what you perceive as incompetence, look at your own party and their 20/20 hindsight... also known as putting their own fortunes above their country's... AKA... spineless cowards.... AKA, Democrats. :p

Copies of handwritten notes by Vice President **** Cheney, introduced at trial by defense attorneys for former White House staffer I. Lewis "Scooter" Libby, would appear to implicate George W. Bush in the Plame CIA Leak case.
