I am attempting to remove the lower unit on a Johnson 1999 130hp to replace the water pump. It appears to be hung up on linkage or something. Do I force it or is there a disconnect somewhere? Thanks

ebird,

The shift rod extends up into the cowling and should have a disconnect below the carburetors. It's not easy to get at.

It helps if the L/U is in reverse.

Re: Impellar installation

ebird99,The shift rod disconnect on your motor is where Djohns mentions. It is a quick-connect type. You'll need to remove the hitch pin from the shift arm as well as the shift cable pin. This will allow you to push in on the shift arm separating the bellcrank from the shift rod.Having the cable pin removed will allow you to swing shift arm clear once bellcrank is separated from shift rod.If you've already removed all of the lower unit bolts,You need to reinstall at least two of them and close the joint back together as to remove any stress that is on the shift rod assy.
