Good Eve gents,
I Cant find the entire kit for a 100hp 72 johnson model 100esl72R. I have heard on the forum that half of the people say change the whole thing, but the other half say just do the impellar. I dont know what to think anymore, and with the trouble of finding the kit, does it really matter? The engine never overheated on the old one, i am just getting ready for regular maintanance. I have the wrong book for now (does Iboats have this manual?, I'll search) does the foot have a gasket where it meets the middle? I will know once i get it apart of course, but i like to be able to put things together the same day i take them apart, so if someone could tell me if I need any other parts, i would greatly appreciate it!! I got the impellar at NAPA, but i have no gaskets etc.

Thanks to all you kind geniuses....

Ther is no mid section gasket - that area is all water waiting to get out and not under much pressure. On the water pump - if this is the first time you have done this job on this motor I'd get the complete pump. Next time around maybe just the impeller. Many of the OMC V4s have an o ring at the top of the driveshaft just below the splines. I don't know if your motor calls for it but you might check.

There's a seal on top of the pump housing, held in a plate that screws into the top of the housing. That seal should be changed. You can get the seal alone (Sierra/NAPA or a bearing house). However, I've had the screws that hold the plate be stuck and destroyed the pump housing when getting them out (the newer pump housings have thread inserts in a plastic body - those ones are easy to destroy).

The housing itself I've never seen have any noticeable wear, on the older motors (pre 1980s). I don't know if our water is cleaner here in New England (less silt in it) or whether older motors just don't get used as much. As I said before, if the housing isn't scratched or worn, there's no magic benefit to putting a new one in off the shelf. The rubber impeller itself is the main wear element. The pump has a metal insert (or is all metal on the older ones) that will wear some, from grit in the water, and if it's worn it should be replaced.
