Impellar / Water Pump

Is it normal for the impellar / water pump to not pump enough water to cool the engine and stream out the weep hole when sitting in the driveway? When idling with a tub of water and all the intake holes covered by the water the over heat alarm eventually goes off within a few minutes. My impellar should be good as it has very few hours on it. I am tempted to go ahead and put it in the lake where I can throttle up in gear and hopefully be OK. Is this a good idea?

i would check the sensor first if it is ok then no i would keep it parked in drive way because you have a heating problem . check thermostat.

check t-stat in pan of water and temp gauge or thermo if it opens at desired temp the ok , but more then likly it is bad if you pumping a good stream of water but take it for what it is worth , but i would not chance on blowing up engine . it cheaper to fix the overheating problem . no motor cost money and then you have to put more money in a new motor to make it right

It probably was not deep enough in a tub of water. The pump sits higher than the inlet holes and won't suck up the water. Might have burned the impeller

yes it is normal on my 84, 85hp. i questioned that several years ago, burned my impeller out. i Never start my motor unless the lower is under water. look up overheating on this page. tons of info on early force impeller/housing issues.
