Impellar?

First off I'm sorry if I'm in the wrong area for this. But I was on here a long time ago because the Bayliner I have wouldn't get on plane if it had four people in it unless someone went and sat on the bow it would. But trim tabs and a new prop helped it a little but not really I'm 99.9% sure the flotation foam is waterlogged because there are soft spots in certain areas. But any way thats not my problem right now. My problem is someone started it out of the water and everyone said if you don't see like a pee stream the impellar is bad but the thing is it runs great doesn't get hot and hasn't lost any power that I can tell. Is there anything I should check to see if its bad or be worried about? Obviously I can't do it right now with snow on the ground its just something I have put off for too long and want to get around to fixing it if there is something wrong.

Someone started it out of water (with no hose connected?) and ran it for how long??

If a few seconds, no harm done. If a few minutes, the water pump is toast. If a lot of minutes, serious engine damage may happen. It all depends on how long w/o any cooling.

Whether or not you see a pee stream, depends on whether the motor has a pee stream; not all do. What kind of motor we talkin bout here?

Another possible cause of no pee stream is blocked outlet -- insects might've nested in there or something.

As far as impeller damage, some say 60 seconds of dry running is enough to damage it. Course, not all damage results in immediate catastrophic failure. Could be just shortened its useful life, and/or reduced it's capacity to pump, elevating engine temps but not to the level of sounding the alarm.

One thing's for sure, if it wasn't pumping water, you'd know it within minutes, when the motor siezed.

I say, if you have any doubts replace the impeller. If you wanted, you could inspect it first, but once you have the old one out, might as well put a new one in.

If it's an inboard / outboard I don't think you will see a "pee" stream. If it is an outboard, pull the cover and see if there is a rubber hose coming off the cylinder head leading to an outlet on the engine housing. That would be the "Tattle tale".
If the impellor hasn't been changed in two years, do it anyway. It's cheaper than burning down the engine.
