I am going to have to replace my impeller soon on my 97 5.7 mercruiser. I have the manual and have looked on deveral sites, but I am trying to find out whether or not I have a 1 or 2 peice pump. I just want to figure it out before I tear it apart.

You are going to need a whole lot more information than that if you want help. Things like model of outdrive, an actual serial number since your engine may not be the same year as your boat.
You could also have an engine mounted pump with an Alpha drive due to a full closed cooling system.

but I am trying to find out whether or not I have a 1 or 2 peice pump.

ALL raw water pumps have more than 2 pieces to them.

Re: Impeller and pump type.

Engine and drive serial number would be the best place to start... Then we can all be talking about the same thing.

1 or 2 piece pump???? Gen I drives have a 14 piece pump and the Gen II drives have a 8 piece pump.

Sorry about that, It is an Alpha 1 outdrive and the drive serial number is 0K044497. THe reason I ask is looking at the manual it looks like there is a difference in the impeller i need to buy, but I could be wrong and usually am.

That's a Gen II... The impeller part number is 47-43026T2 and looks like this....

You should also replace the 2 gaskets. #27-430331 and #27-8172771.

The right manual is #14.

This is the one you DON'T WANT..the older type (for the Gen I drives) and it looks like this....

Re: Impeller and pump type.

Just looked up your SN. You have an Alpha I Gen II outdrive, not an Alpha I. BIG difference.
I would suggest you get the OEM impeller kit that includes the gaskets and wear plate. The kit number is 47-43026Q06

???????????????? Wow, I am way late on this one

Re: Impeller and pump type.

I have been looking in the Mercruiser Service Manual #17 that I downloaded off here. So I have been looking at the wrong one all this time? Thanks for the part #'s btw. Does Sierra have a part #? Also, the impeller i want to replace is the one in the engine pump not outdrive right.
I just looked up the part number you gave me and that is the impeller for the outdrive. I am looking for the one that goes in the coolant pump on the motor.

Are you talking about the engine circulation pump? this one....

The impeller is not a separately serviced item... You need to buy the whole pump....

Unless you have an engine driven seawater pump? In which case you want #47-59362T1

Service manual #14 section 3B covers your drive and the raw water pump.

Not if he has a Bravo style engine-mounted seawater pick up pump. That's in manual #17...

How does one tell what kind of pump they have? I have an engine mounted pump for the raw side of my closed cooling. My boat is a 1978, but it has an Alpha one first gen on it. I do know the boat was ordered with closed cooling, so that should be covered in the engine manual for it?
Sorry, was thinking out loud there.

Yes, Engine mounted pumps are covered in the engine book.

Re: Impeller and pump type.

OK, after a little more research and looking at past repair receipts I am sure I need to replace the impeller in the lower drive unit so I downloaded the manual #14. What i am wondering is if I can just drop the bottom of the lower unit without romoving the entire outdrive? If someone has a website with directions that would be great!! Thanks for all the help btw.

Yes, you can. But it is not advisable for first timers. Too many things can go wrong, plus there are other things you should be checking at the same time since you seem to know little about the maintenance needed on the IO's.
