Impeller change on 1988 Merc 6hp

I want to change the impeller on my 6hp. So I took out the 3 bolts holding the lower unit in place and attempted to drop the lower unit. Problem is that it would only separate about 2" and no further. Is there something else I have to remove, loosen or undo to get the lower unit completely off? I stopped and buttoned the lower end back on pending some advice from this group. Any advice would help

Did you disconnect the shift rod?

I don't know if those smaller motors have trim tabs or not but mine has a hidden bolt under the trim tab anode......

No, I did not know that was required. On my other Mercs, I just undid the bolts and the lower unit came off. Guess I need to take a look there.
