All, have a 1992/120 Force, model 120ELPT/E002593. I also have a SELOC manual. In the manual it gives about 3 different directions on how to change the impeller, I'm somewhat mechnical but this will be my first try at changing the impeller. One direction states to put it in reverse before I drop the lower unit, It has a cotter pin on the shaft in front of the lower unit, do I need to take the pin out before I lower the unit? Help soonest

Yes! You need to remove the cotter so the shift rods can separate. Putting it in reverse makes it a little easier. It's not a difficult job, just remember the hidden bolt inside the exhaust snout.

Putting it in reverse alows you to turn the shaft by way of the prop to line it up upon installation.

Both what they said is right. Cotterpin out. In gear when putting the lower unit back on to have the ability to move the drive shaft to line it up. There is a hidden bolt in the exhaust and make sure the veins on the impeller go the same way, and yes, the impeller is slightly oversized and off center. Dont over tighten the houseing, it cracks easy, I cracked mine but learned from it. Have fun!!

Re: Impeller Change

OK all,

My parts for the impeller change arrived, last couple of questions before I begin, when exacted do I need to put it reverse to line everything up. Is this by just using my shifter for reverse, second can I put the inpeller in the water pump housing before sliding it down the shaft to make it easier. West Marine told me to use some Pet Jelly on the impeller, he said be generous,
Thanks for the help!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Here's a little tip, put the (lubed up) impeller on the shaft first, (make sure it's on the key right), then turn the shaft clockwise slowly as you press the (lubed) housing down over it, it should go on like butter! and, you're sure to have the vanes going in the right direction. Any kind of grease will work.

Re: Impeller Change

OK Everyone,

Dropped the LU and changed the impeller just like the manual says but a rubber piece and a small metal piece fell off when I was taking the LU off, I take it this is some kind of drive shaft oil seal, what is the best way to put it on? Should I put on on the driveshaft or reinsert it back into the LU?
Thanks,

Seaforce
