I just got my seahorse 4 (4r74r) going it runs like a top! Everyone seems to agree i should change the water pump impeller. (I dont have a service manual yet). How in depth is the job? I conseder myself mechanicaly savy but have no outboard experiance. Are there any special tools required? Thanks in advance this site has already proved to be worth its weight in gold!

Re: impeller change

First off WELCOME!! You'll love this site...don't forget you can get your parts through the site...great prices and you support the site at the same time! I don't know about your engine personally but I'm sure you probably won't have much trouble with it. Common hand tools should be all you need. Someone will chime in soon with more knowledge on your engine. If your going to keep the engine I would really get a OMC/Johnson/Evinrude manual...not the others..try to find a regular service manual....it will pay for itself over and over again. One thing I like to do on water pumps is since they are rubber and fit very tightly the can be a bit hard to get into the housing..I'm always afraid of damaging it...so I apply dishwashing soap....ie..dawn, joy, etc...makes them go in much easier...and will allow it to slip easily the first go round...GOOD LUCK!!
