Do I need to put grease on the drive shaft seals above and below water pump housing? Where the seal actually contacts the drive shaft. Also do I need to put any type of sealant or grease on the Inlet waterline seal (that attaches to the water pump housing) This is the seal that the water actually goes thru from the water pump.

Re: Impeller/driveshaft seals

When I assemble seals onto shafts, I either grease them or use some lower unit oil on the lips. I also do this on the upper pump seal even though it only runs in water. Is it mandatory?--I figure it couldn't hurt and will lubricate them for that critical first start. The tapered plastic bushing that plugs into the pump outlet does not need anything, but a little anti-seize will prevent it from sticking to the brass water tube later on.

I would lubricate the seals with white lithium grease so that they slide on easier. I also coat the impeller with dish soap so it goes into the housing easier.

Hope this helps,

I?d put some grease on them, like others have said it helps reduce the friction/heat of the first start. I use Vaseline on the impeller, it remains on rubber (as apposed to dish soap) for future starts for the first second or two when there is little or no water in the housing. Plus I wouldn?t want the soap in my engine.
