Well, that's up to you. I like a working H2O pump over a burned up powerhead.

It all depends on where/how you use the engine.

Lots of silt/sand=every year.

Nothing but clean water, maybe every three.

If you do not know your pumps history-CHANGE IT.

Waiting for the impeller to fail is like waiting for a massive MI, Tex.

It will almost certainly be too late to do anything about it.

The impeller is so important that it pays to change it periodically. I've changed three so far, and all
of them were in bad shape. After you've done it once, changing the impeller is easy. I'd guess that
every year in dirty water; every second year in deep salt water; and every three years in deep fresh water.
I don't know why they built such a weak spot in modern motors. I have a 1947 motor with an aluminum impeller that's still pumping strong.

Re: Impeller/H2O pump

As already stated, it depends on where and how the motor is used. It is a preventative maintenance procedure. Easier and cheaper to replace the impeller than rebuild a powerhead. Many owners seldom or never change them. I know of three motors where the impeller is 10+ years old and still working. They may quit tomorrow or may continue to function for another 10 years. No one can say for certain.
