Considering purchasing a 1988 Javelin with a 110 HP Evinrude 4cyl ob. It needs an impeller (which the guy has) and since I'm a do-it yourselfer w/ no boat experience, I was wondering if you could give me an idea of what I'd be getting into.

Is this a difficult or fairly simple job?

Any special toos required?

Thanks a million!

Re: Impeller help....

Search the forums for more detailed info and if you are going to do it I would get the manual. It is not very difficult if you are fairly mechanical. It involves disconnecting the shift rod under the front of the powerhead, unbolting the lower unit and dropping it down. Of course it may take you 45 minutes to disconnect the shift rod if it is your first time as it is a little tricky. And then taking apart the waterpump. You will need at least a new waterpump housing gasket as well. See if you can run the engine before purchase although that may be difficult with a shot waterpump. If not check compression, if the motor was run without cooling it could have reamed the cylinders.

Re: Impeller help....

captain jeff basicall gave you all you need 2 know.if your mechanically incline ,you will have noproblem,a hint or two, regarding the shift pin rempvay,it is located under the bottom carb.it has a 3/8 head and is easier to remove if you put the shifter in reverse,it is located from the starboard side,it helps to disconnect the throttle and shift cables,if you have a 1/4 inch 12 or 15 inch extension ,a 3/8 flexable head socket and 1/4 drive ratchet ,it makes it easier to get at,you can use other tools, but i have found these to make it easiset,a grabber tool is a plus,be sure when you remove the lower unit that no one starts spinning the shift shaft, the length is important and spinning it changes the length because its threaded inside the gearcase, when re installing,it helps to have long needle nose, especially vice grip to align the shaft with access under the powerhead pan,you will see what im talking about ,good luck ,help is always here

Re: Impeller help....

Thanks Jeff and Mike, I think I'll make the purchase. He fired the boat and ran it for a second or two, and the impeller works as is, he said it was reccomended to change it every 2-3 years and he also said he got the over heat buzzer a couple of times so he thought it best to go ahead and replace.

If this is a salt water engine consider replacing the thermostats as well.

Re: Impeller help....

Got R done!

It wasn't too bad.
I did take off the lower carb (was my first time). Now that I see for myself how it works, I can take the short cut next time.

Was more trouble getting the plastic locking tab (that keep the impeller locked to the shaft) than anything. Actually that was the problem, the impeller was good, but the tab had came out.

Thanks for all the tips!
