what is the best way to check for water flow? Where is the tale-tell hose? Or is the outlet on the lower unit itself. Motor seems to be getting hot. 1996 Johnson 25hp J25TELEDA.
looking from the back of the motor, the tale tell is located, right rear on the lower cowl. they get clogged with kritters nest, run some stiff weed eater line up there. you should get with with in 10 seconds of starting motor.
I was just looking at some diagrams for your motor and TD beat me to it. If your motor is an unknown then you should give it a water pump service and change the lower unit oil as well.

well took impeller out. Way bad shape. and yes lost the nylon shift keeper, the piece that clips on the shaft at water inlet plate. how do you find one of them?
