Hey Guys,

Very new to boats, I have a 96 40hp johnson, is it hard to change out the impeller. Looking at it I guess I have to take off the lower leg to get to it. Or should I just pay to have it done.

That all depends on your mechanical skills, and, or, your access to a manual.

I did mine this summer without a manual and it took less than an hour, from start to finish, with running motor, and I took my time.

I hadn't ever replaced one, nor had I watched anyone else do one since I was a kid. There were step by step instructions in the water pump kit package, but I didn't see them till I already had it all apart. I just glanced at them and went back to work.

It was easy.

I will get a manual and orders the parts.

Do I get a water pump kit or just an impeller?

I would just get the impeller, unless you take the gearcase off and for some reason the pump looks worn down or something. Did the motor come from freshwater or saltwater?

It came from fresh water and the impeller has never been changed. I am using it in salt water, it pumps great but thought it be a good idea to replace.

I would just change the impeller. All the water pump is, is basically a housing for the impeller. Really, the only folks that end up changing them is people that do have their motors run in saltwater, or freshwater people that are in real sandy lakes.

If it was me, I would just change the impeller. Maybe take the pump off and clean it real good. If when you change the impeller, it fits in there nice and snug...then no reason to change pump. If there is a retainer or seal in it, I would change that though.
