Hey Folks,
I have a 1977 85 horse evinrude model 85793S. I ordered a water pump kit from Iboats and I have a question. The plate and all the grommets match perfectly. My original impeller was chewed up so bad I can't tell if my new one is the right one or not. The diameter is a good bit larger than my housing. To get it in there I will have to fold all the vanes over into a pretty severe angle. I would think they should touch the housing, but not have to be folded over this much. Anyone have a picture or drawing of this? You folks are the best, and advice will be appreciated.

its a tight fit, it sounds about right. see why if its spinning dry at 800 RPM it will melt rapidly? thats why you never start it without water. but for the V4 rudes and V6 rudes the impellers stayed the same for many years then changed in the late 70's but the housing and plate stayed the same for another decade or so.
odds are you have the correct impeller.

Okay, with the impellor stabbed on the driveshaft squirt some dishsoap on the wings of the impellor. Now while pushing the housing down on the impeller turn the driveshaft clockwise. The wings of the impellor will flex and when they go around the long side of the housing they will slip in place. I say long side becaose if you look at the hole in the housing you will see that its not in the exact center. Its set a little to one side.

yes this is correct, the vanes should be turned in the housing, you should use some oil when assembling the impeller back into the housing, this will ease the vanes back into the housing !

Raymond,

That's normal for the vanes to have a severe bend in them. The manual shows a diagram that if you were veiwing the the top of the pump housing (looking down from the motor) the tips of the vanes should point in a counter clockwise direction. Which would be clockwise if viewing from the inside of the housing while holding it in your hand.

You should also think about pulling/replacing the t'stat where you'll probably find some of the missing peices of the old impeller.

Re: impeller installation

personally I try to use dishsoap or vasoline as certain oils may attack rubber. and I usually load the impeller in the housing first so the vanes dont grab the oring, either way is ok just make sure the housing oring is in place when your done.
oil is ok if your gonna fire it up soon.
I have been known to shoot it with a little fogging oil if I know its going back into service that day.
