impeller installation

on a 98 180 Sea Ray, 3.0 ltr, when installing a new impeller, what way do you bend the wings of the impellar when putting into the impeller housing, or does it matter?<br /><br />I forgot to look at it when I took the old one out, so I tried to figure out which way they would bend while the boat was going forward.<br /><br />I am truly retarded.<br /><br />Spud

If it a Merc it wont matter.....It will straighten itself out as soon as you hit the key....JK

Hate to tell you this JK, but if he indead does have a Merc, it does matter. He would have a Gen II drive and those vanes will not flop over the other way and it will not put out as much water in installed improperly.<br />They would flip over the right direction on the older (Pre 91) Alpha and Pre Alpha drives.

You want to turn the shaft clockwise when installing the pump cover over the vanes so the vanes curl in a counterclockwise direction . I just did mine. Look here http://www.boatfix.com/merc/Servmanl/14/14b3.pdf Page #75 Brian

That's all well and good, IF he has a Mercruiser. That information is worthless if he has a Volvo.<br /><br />That is why I ask before giving a bunch of explanions ...............
