I'm having trouble getting my waterpump to pump water. I put in a new kit but noticed that the key that holds the impeller on the shaft is worn out a bit and the Impeller seems to be a bit loose. Should it be loose a bit or should it have no play at all?
I have tried everything like flushing out the inlet and outlet pipes, made sure i havve the pump fully submerged in water but still wont pump water, so the problem must be the key. Also i am unable to take the key out as it is stuck, is there any way of getting it loose?
Thank's and all replies appreciated

What motor? If its a new impeller and its seated correctly with the key, there should be no problem. When you flushed the tube did you blow water up it? does your motor have a telltale? did water come out?

Well, you don't say what you're working on.... so here's a couple of possibles.

I don't think a little play will hurt, a lot might. It would take some hammerin' and pryin' to get the old key out, be prepared to replace it.

Are you sure the tube(s) going up to the powerhead seated properly in the grommet(s)? If not, the pumped water will not be going where it should...

Just my humble and less educated .02 worth. Good luck:)

on some of those Johnnyrudes, the key is plastic and jams into the impeller in order to turn it positively. To release, turn the impeller "backwards"..

You need to jam the key into the impeller when you install a new one, or it will not turn. I ended up installing the key into the impeller, on the driveshaft, and turning the drivesahft CW to lock it in, and install the waterpump cover.

Sorry, it's a 1971 18hp evinrude model: 18102s. the key is metal. I did blow water up the and removed the thermostat housing and water was coming out the top and it doesn't have a pee hole but the water comes out the exhaust hole.
