Impeller keyway issue

Just a quik question regarding the impeller install on my waterpump rebuild. When I tried to use the poly keyway provided with the rebuild kit that I bought, I could not get the impeller to sit all the way down onto the floor plate of pump assembly.
It would start, but hangup about halfway down, every time I tried. Finally out of frustration,I reinstalled the stainless steel pin type key, that was in the replaced impeller. What was I doing wrong? Will the stainless type key work alright, or did they go to plastic because of problems with the stainless keys? Motor is a 1985 6 hp Johnson Sailmaster, model J6SLCOB. Thanks for any info provided. :joyous:

Dumb question. Did you have the impeller and the wedge going in the right direction ??

Re: Impeller keyway issue

Hey Boobie,
No dumb questions here! I have never done a rebuild before. I did not realize that the key or the impeller were position specific. I looked at the parts before assembly, and could not tell that either one had an angle to them. Do they? Was that my problem? Will the stainless pin work OK? It sild right together, first try. If that is the case, I cannot believe that it was not mentioned in the assembly instructions that came with the kit, or in my Seloc repair manual. Let me know for future reference, please.

Are you using something to hold the poly key in place while you push the pump down?.
What was the part # of the kit?.

Re: Impeller keyway issue

I went with an OEM Bombadier Racing Parts kit to avoid this type of problem, figuring the parts would be exact replacements. The kit part number is 0396644 1. I put a dab of grease on the poly keyways flat, then set it into the corresponding flat on the drive shaft. Kept it flush to driveshaft flat with a popsical stick(Snapon Tool of course)as I worked impeller onto it. It just would not let the impeller fully seat flush to the stainless bottom plate of housing. Tried inverting both pieces, one at a time, but to no avail. Put the stainless pin in place, and it went together with no effort.

Well none of the #s, S.S so it should all fit, one more ? is the color of the key white or black.

Color of the key is white. Will it work OK using the original SS pin type keywey? The impeller that I removed, which used the SS pin type keyway, looked just the same as the new one. Why the change to poly keyways?

Re: Impeller keyway issue

idk if this will help buti always put the impellar in the upper housing first rotating it clockwise i beleive not sure on that but u have to rtate it a cetain way then rotate and lign key up with slot sliding into position sometimes it will take a few trys to get it perfect. as long as it ligned up and spining with the shaft i dont see y it wont work as long as old key isnt worn to bad u should be able to compare them and see what the wear n tear is like ...

Re: Impeller keyway issue

The manufactures put in different keys to cover a lot of mtrs. After reading all of the above, stick with the stainless.
