1976 i6 165 mercruiser.

I last used the boat 2 years ago and have finally fixed the hydraulics. Do I need to remove the drive to replace the impeller? I am familiar with engines and the like, but have never replaced the impeller.

You can just separate the lower half, shifter in forward, and lower in forward during reinstallation:

twist lower shift lever clockwise while holding prop ccw till it locks. Maintian psi on it by hand or with a bungee to keep in in forward, if it gets bumped have to separate it again and re do it.

Couple of you tube videos:.

The whole job is in the Mercruiser drive manual, if you have not removed the drive in a couple of years you prob. should to inspect the bellows and gimbal bearing. grease the ujoints and gimbal bearing.

Have fun

Videos always help!

So to clarify, I need to remove the lower drive until from the boat. Can you clarify: twist lower shift lever clockwise while holding prop ccw till it locks. Maintian psi on it by hand or with a bungee to keep in in forward, if it gets bumped have to separate it again and re do it.

What is the lower shift lever?

Funny thing, I removed the drive 5 years ago with the help of someone else and put it on with his instructions, and know the boat has to be in forward upon reinstall.

This is the lower shift shaft you will see it when you separate the two halves:

When you move the shifter in the boat this is the piece at the furthest end of the line. Needs to be in forward for everything to work right.
