Just had a mechanic install a new impeller on my 88 evinrude xp 150 because the old one wasnt pumping out any water but after he installed new impeller it still wont pump out any water thru the outlet tube do i need to buy a impeller repair kit off this site is that my best bet. also when he took off the housing 2 bolts broke but he told me it would work fine without those, with the other to bolts tightened.

Re: Impeller not pumping out any water

The water pump Could be pumping but not coming from the pee hole...check the pee hole for clogging or restrictions in the water jackets. If that checks out, the impeller may not be seated on the shaft key correctly.

No offense, but you may want to get an easy out for the other two bolts

if all that checks good could it be the thermostat.

What, kind of mechanic did you take it to, if he replaced it and it still doesn't work then he didn't complete the job, not to mention that any mechanic worth his weight in salt wont just say "oh those 2 broken bolts are fine".

If 2 of the 4 bolts on the housing are broken then water can very well leak out of the housing therefore not creating enough pressure to even get the water up the tube to the motor. It can also cause the shaft to ride improperly in the housing and tear up the seal....again creating a leak.

The other thing to look for is that the tube is properly seated into the housing. If you took this to a legit mechanic then you should be taking it back to him and telling him to get it fixed.

hes coming back friday to fix it we never checked it after the install cause he was also cleaning my carbs and it started getting dark and raining. but after we do all those and it still wont work could a thermostat change be the problem.

Get yourself a real mechanic, get those bolts replaced that are broken. Have your next mechanic inspect the work, sounds like the water pump wasnt installed correctly. Good luck!

Ok I pulled lower unit off heated up those broken bolts and got them out. I ordered the waterpump repair kit since I got unit out and its 23 yrs old. Should I replace the thermostats. I looked at 1 and it had **** growing on it lol. I never new it had thermostats cause I had the impression that water always circulated thru the engine from the impeller pumping it

If they look corroded then replace them, especially since you said it hasn't been done in 20 years.

The thermostats ensure the motor runs at its optimum temp, without them it would likely run "cold" all the time causing rough running and premature wear, they also play a large part in ensuring the water supply from the pump reaches the top of the powerhead.....

Re: Impeller not pumping out any water

You stated you had debris in the thermostat housing. That housing is the last thing the cooling water goes through before it exits into the midsection. That means the debris in the thermostat housing got there by circulating through the entire engine before they lodged in the stats. You want to do some further investigation. There may have similar debris in the heads. I'd pull the head covers (not the heads) and see if there is debris restricting the water passages there. If you find anything significant, you may also want to pull the heads and check the water passages around the cylinders-esp the rubber water diverters.

Re: Impeller not pumping out any water

Would you do all that if water was coming out strong from the pee hole

The outlet for the telltale is upstream of the heads and cylinders. You can have a strong telltale and still have a blockage in the powerhead
