I searched and could not find a similar problem.

I have an Alpha I Gen II outdrive on a 2000 Regal that I operate mostly in salt water.

I changed the impeller (did not look bad) because I wasn't getting flow through the intake hose at the t-stat. With the new impeller - same result so I just removed the lower housing again, backflushed everything to be safe, made sure the tubes had been properly aligned. This time the impeller was shot - no missing blades but was obviously running dry. Taking a closer look - I am wondering if the erosion on the housing that separates the raw water intake from the exhaust is allowing air/exhaust to be sucked in and not water.

I was hoping to make it through this year then replace next year with SE 116. Here is a picture:

That's what I was afraid of - is it possible to fix/replace or should I just go ahead and order a new outdrive from Sterndrive Engineering?

Bond-O

your user name (and your post) were an inspiration.

I used JB Weld marine product (not quite bondo) and "repaired" the area of corrosion and smoothed the surface where the gasket sits. Just ran great on the muffs and in a tank. The repair felt very solid. I would think that it is a low pressure area and any force would be pushing the repair toward the rubber block which would lend some support.

I still plan on getting a new outdrive, but I hope this buys me some time so I can iron out some issues/logistics with my dock and floating lift so I don't repeat the mistakes which led to the condition of my current drive.

Thanks - this site should be required before you buy a boat
