As it states im wondering whether i should replace my water pump impeller now, during my winterize, or whether it could prolong the life by changing it at the beginning of next season? Can the impeller sitting over the winter cause it to dry rot etc? Or will it not make much of a difference? The extra work doesn't really bother me, just whatever will keep the life of the impeller?

Do it now, do it then...just make sure you do it right. That includes a pressure test after re-assembly.
The arctic chill of a northern Georgia winter (cough/hack)won't have any affect!:D

If you change your gear lube during winterizing as you should, and pull your drive and check the bellows etc. as you should. Then might as well do it during winterization while everything is apart and being worked on.
The Gen II impellers should be good for 3 years at least depending what you boat in. Lot of sand and mud, sure would be good to look for excess wear.

Yes, and the drive needs to be empty, no gear lube in it.

can the water pump replacement being done wrong cause the drive to not hold pressure?

since yer supposed to change the gear lub at end of season. that's a good time to replace the impeller as the gear lub is drained. myself. i store my drive inside during the winter layup. round about jan. i get around to changing the gear lub and replacing the impeller. so far i've been changing impellers every year. but i have a alpha1 type impeller that are pretty fragile imho. the genII ones seem to be more robust.

i've not experienced that, but assuming i do the deed mid winter, it's only gonna sit for 3-4 months prior to going back into service.
