Impeller Or Repair Kit?

I am going to order a seal kit for my l6 115 HP 1983. I am also replacing the impeller of course. Should I order the water pump repair kit or will everything I need be in a seal kit to replace the impeller? What would be the advantages of a repair kit?

The advantage of a water pump repair kit is that you will be ready for anything you find when you pull the foot to get at the pump. On a 20 year old motor, I believe you probably will need to plan on replacing more than just the impeller. Good luck.

I ordered before you guys had a chance to post. The guy talked me into a impeller repair kit for some reason. I will let you know how it all comes out in the end. Any tips before I dig into seals and pump? Is there a shift rod to undo before dropping the lower unit? I don't remember my manual listing that step.

So do you have to disconnect a shifting rod or does it just slide out?

shift rod is splined and should come right out<br />with driveshaft. make sure to use some good spline<br />grease when re-installing. the pump "kit" is just<br />a couple of gaskets along with impeller. you'll <br />need a 5/8" allen wrench to remove bolt that holds<br />trim tab on.<br />good luck,<br />M.Y.

Are you sure I will need an allen wrench? I took off the black tab and only found a regular bolt. Is there another one hiding somewhere? Also my manual calls for a special tool to remove the shift shaft bushing. Will I have to have this tool and if so where can I get one?

my '70 1150 has a 5/8 hex that holds the trim<br />tab on... my manual shows it for your year too,<br />but not sure cuz it covers many years. also, once<br />trim tab is removed, there is a bolt underneath.
