Impeller overhaul questions

I've just removed the bottom end of my 1988 175hp V6, to replace the impeller and have a couple of questions. There seems to be quite a bit of play in the bearing on the drive shaft just below the water pump. Is this normal, if not can it be adjusted out by tightening the bearing retainer. My manual says it is a taper roller bearing, but there's no mention of adjustment. Also I noticed there is a small hole in the pump base on the outlet side. What is this for, it seems like it will just fill up the inside of the leg with water

Re: Impeller overhaul questions

the hole is a drain to help prevent freeze damage and the play is normal
the taper faces up ,if you tighten the adjustmet by reshiming the bearing clearence you will see what a destroyed case looks like.
there is plenty of mention of adjustment, read and turn on the reading comprehension goggles. its under driveshaft shimming. it will explain all.
goes back to RTFM before attempting a job.

Re: Impeller overhaul questions

Thanks for the info, sounds like good news. I'll have another go at finding it in the manual. Whilst I've got it apart, it is safe/useful to connect a hose to the water pipe to flush the system through

why bother? it wont flush anybetter than with the lower unit on. dont mean to sound harsh but so far this week I have had 2 motors trashed by do it yourself maint that the problems were induced then run by the do it yourselfer. read the entire section, read the intro read the maint section. become familiar with what your maintaining. if not you may miss a problem or worse induce one.

Re: Impeller overhaul questions

Hey, I'm trying to get familiar with what I'm doing, hence the questions. As I'm sure you know the Clymer manual that I have covers a whole load of different engines, so it's not that easy for a beginner to find the relevant bits. One last question for now, how does the water that comes out of the hole in the pump base escape. I can't see a drain anywhere for it.

Re: Impeller overhaul questions

it drains into the cavity near the shift shaft pocket. I agree with ya on the clymer manuals, but the info is still there. use a highlighter pen as you read the manual at breakfast and such and start highlighting parts that affect your v6
no worries on the questions :) :) keep them coming and you will find a lot of help. if your pump base shows anysign of melting replace it as well. may as well check the pressure valve diaphram as well and do the t-stats too. you will need 2 gaskets and a diaphram 2 t-stats and 2 tstat seals.
if the diaphram ruptures, and all do, it will leak water into the cowl and make nasties
