I installed a new impeller in my 9.9 HP, 1965 Mercury boat motor. The first time I started it water only came out of the small hole on the side. I then cleaned out the water exhaust manifold channel.

When I started the motor the next time water came out of the small hole on the side and it would pee out the big hole (there was not a lot of water coming out. The next time I started the motor it quit peeing. I took the lower unit off to recheck the impeller and it looks ok. I used a water hose, water came out of the pee hole and the small hole on the side.

What do I need to do now it will pee when I first start it then it quits. The next time the motor may start peeing or it may not (Interment). What could the problem be that it does not pee like it should?

Could it be the new impeller? I do not thank there is any type of blockage in the water passage ways.

i have been using a 55gallon water barrel . i do not know if this has any thing to do with it but after runing the motor there was a grease film in the barrel.

What is your engine s/n? Are you sure this is a 9.9 or could it be a Mercury 110, 9.8? The greasy film in the water bucket is just exhaust being dumped into a small contained area. You really don't see it on the lake as you are moving away from it most of the time. When using the bucket, you must have the water level well above the anti-ventilation plate. The bucket is the best way to run it out of the lake.

The motor is a 9.8 110 S/N 1875542 1965

I added a lot more water to the barrel. I started the motor and it ideal for a least 3 or 4 minutes with a good stream of water coming out of the pee hole and the small hole on the side. When I dropped the lower unit to recheck the impeller I did not get it back right because it does not go in gear now. When i switch from neutral to forward or reverse it does not go in gear. Hope I did not screw up some thing.

Thanks for the water level information. I am going to drop the lower unit and reinstall at least I know why it was not peeing.
This boat motor work is all new to me.

Thanks for the information. It is peeing now and goes into gear. I believe it is leaking a little water around the gasket were the motor (cylinder block and crankcase assembly)bolts down to the lower cowl. I tightened the nuts up a little more. If it does not get any worst can I just let it be? I did not replace the gasket that is under the cowl just the top one.

Pity you hadn't changed the seal when you were in there as it is not going to get any better. How long before it gets worse, I certainly can't answer that. If it were mine, I would be lifting it again and replacing the gasket.
