73 johnson 85 hp

I am installing a water pump this week and have one last question. The impeller looks the same on both sides so it does not make a difference which way it goes in. Right

I am also using permetex(blue stuff for water pumps) to seal the waterpump gasket and exhaust rubber seal. I could not find sealant 1000 or some of the other sealers suggested.

Also, it does not make a difference which guide I put on the cooper tubes ( one is short and one is long) since these are only guides

Thanks

Re: Impeller question

I have a 73 135 Hp, Don't know about the impeller but the guide tubes don't really matter as long as they want interfer with anything else, when I put mine back together I bought new ones and made sure both of them was the long ones just to make it a little easier to line the lower unit and the copper water tubes back up.
Good luck

Re: Impeller question

If the impeller uses a metal key, no difference either side. Plastic wedge type key does make a difference. Make sure vanes are bent in right direction when replacing.

Re: Impeller question

did this recently on 86 Johnson 60. My first water pump rebuild, I had same question as you and spent a while staring at it. Impeller looks same on either side, but central hole may not, has a "lip" on one side. As wildeone says, if you have plastic wedge key, you can only put this on one way, the lip is up.
