Hello All,

I recently replaced the water pump on my 1992 431A Volvo Penta. So all is good, right? The question: "Is there an additional water pump or some other type of device in my lower unit that I need to keep my eye on?" My mercruiser buddy tells me that there is also an impeller in the lower unit to go with the one on the motor. I have looked in all my books and do not see one. Should I get some more books or stop worrying about it. The lower unit is a 92 290DP.

Re: Impeller Question

You will have 2 pumps somewhere. One will be the Raw Water Impeller/Pump in either the lower unit, or mounted on the motor for sea water pickup. It will pump it to the Thermostat housing, where it will be distributed to the manifolds, and the other pump, the Circulation Pump, mounted in the front of the engine, Which did you change? If only the big heavy one piece in front of the motor (and if so, I hope you bought a marine one, as auto ones won't last), you still need to replace the rubber impeller in the raw water pump. Not sure on your 290, but my 280 has no pump in the lower leg, its mounted on the motor on the right side. And I think the mercs have theres in the leg, but I'm sure someone will be along soon here to clarify your situation,. Good luck.

Re: Impeller Question

I changed the one on the front of the motor, it mounts to the harmonic balancer, it was a marine one, $288.00 bucks worth of marine one, nothing cheap about boat parts. I am not aware of the another one you are talking about for the?

Re: Impeller Question

Where dose your raw water come from. If it comes from the drive, there is a water pump in the drive also. Pushing the water up to the pump on the front of the crank. If it sucks the water out of a water pick in the bottom of the boat then you should only have the pump on the crank and the circulation pump (car water pump on the front of the motor).
