If I have warm water spraying out does it mean that everything is working ok with the cooling system?

Re: Impeller Question?

If by "spraying out" you mean through the telltale and/or exhaust port(s), then it is a good sign but no guarantee.

What's your motor and how long since the water pump was rebuilt?

It's a 1960 3hp Johnson. From what I can tell it sprays out of 6 small holes on the front of the lower part of the shaft.

Re: Impeller Question?

Water spraying out those 6 little holes is the indication that your water pump is working. It's a good idea to remove the cowling and put a finger on the side of the power head and feel for excess heat. If you can hold a finger on the side of the block for a few seconds, then it's cooling OK. The top of the cylinder head (between the 2 spark plugs) will run a bit hotter and this is normal. It might be a good idea to replace the water pump impeller if you don't know the last time it was done. This way you will know for sure how old the pump is.

Those are the idle relief holes (exhaust ports). There's no telltale on that engine. There's a flush access screw just at the base of the tiller arm from which you can check & see if water is reaching the engine (but not necessarily going through! The screw taps the cooling water just before it enters the engine).
Don't run it for more than a couple seconds with the flush screw out though!

Re: Impeller Question?

I took the screw out under the tiller arm and water shot out just like you said a couple of feet. I felt of the motor on the side of the cylinder and in between the spark plugs it felt hot, but not so hot that I couldn't leave my finger there for 8 to 10 seconds or so. I think its cooling good.

Should this motor have a housing covering the carb area? If so mine doesn't have one and where could I get one?

Re: Impeller Question?

If it's the same as my 59' , 3hp it has a shrowd that covers the whole lower half of the motor. I'm not sure where you are going to find one, but maybe someone here has a connection. Either way, the motor will run fine without it. When I was tuning mine, I ran it without the shrowd for awhile until I was sure it was going to stay running good.

Good luck, Darrell
