What's included in an impeller repair kit? It's priced lower than just the impeller. I asked my dealer but he didn't know. Do I need both? Part # 379763 for a 1965 Johnson 5hp.

Also, is the screen (part #20 in the diagram) necessary? My dealer says it's out of production.

Buy whichever is cheaper, it is strange that the kit would be cheaper. It usually will have the key with it and maybe a couple of othr do-dads.

Without the screen you may suck up some trash that is too big to go through the water tube or passages in the block, plugging it up.

Thanks FR, could I make a screen of my own with something to strain out any junk in the water before it hits the pump? I was thinking of those plastic scouring pads or bath puffs. They're usually made using a strip of plastic mesh with fairly large openings.

Yes, gone. Just like the lower end oil plug gaskets. Someone before me got rid of the unimportant features.

I have the 1965 parts diagram and it does not even show the screen. I did find that ishopmarine lists it as special order, but I would expect that sea-way or laingsoutboards or fairwindsmarina would have it in stock. Add your own .com.

There are probably large yards in Canada, Australia, South America and UK/Europe that carry inventories of older parts as well as used parts. I don't have them yet, but when I do, I will certainly add them to my list.
