Impeller Replacement 66' Johnson 40hp

I just had my fathers old boat restored. The engine needs a new impeller but I can't figure out how to get at it and I can't seem to find a video or instruction online that shows me how. Something is always different on my engine then the one they are working on. Can anybody help me?

Keep in mind I am very much an amateur when it comes to mechanical work. Everyone I've talked to keeps telling me it's quite easy to do but so far, no luck for me.

Again, it's a 1966 Johnson 40hp Super Sea-Horse.

Electric shift or manual shift?----Step # 1 is to remove the rear / lower cowling.---Disconnect shift rod or wires.-----Then 6 bolts and one big one at the rear.

So, are you looking for a step-by-step? That would take a bit of typing. As mentioned, is it long shaft or short shaft? I assume it is manual shift (Super Sea Horse).

Do you have a link you could share?

I've searched around and watched a view different videos but their always seems to be something physically different about my engine from they one they are working on. More or less, existent or nonexistent screws and bolts, that sort of thing.

I know, I was kinda surprised as well.

It's a manual shift, and I'm embarrassed to say, I don't know if it's long or short. Sorry, I'm just trying to bring my dads legacy to life, he passed some time ago. We were always on the water, but that was a long time ago and I was never an expert in the mechanical.

I'd probably need step by step but I don't want to waste anyone's time.

When they restored the boat they said they had the engine rebuilt but apparently left in the original impeller, which seems like an oversight. It was fixed up out of town and they did one last test the day before I picked it up. That's when it stopped cycling water. Their mechanic couldn't make it in before I had to leave town with it but they all seemed to think it would be easy for me to do myself.

I'm just wondering if it would be best for me to track down an outboard mechanic, but I'm told they aren't easy to find.

Ha, fair enough, but thanks, I did finally find one that looks like my engine, working my way through it now and so far so good. Strange that it didn't pop up in all my other differently worded searches, but that's the internet for ya.

Thank you, I'm working my way throught it now. I had a fight with one of the screws on the lower cowling that took some negotiating.

You could also search for a "factory " service manual, they usually give great step by step and pictures !! Makes an excellent accessory if you ever decide to sell !

2. at the left most of the HTTPS.... row left click/hold the mouse
