Going to attempt to replace the impeller this weekend for the first time. Have read the manual and it seems relatively straight forward, however, I have a few questions.

The manual refers to OMC 1000 Gasket maker to seal the housing. Would gasket maker used for automobile engine valve covers work or is a special "marine" gasket maker necessary?

The manual also suggests that prior to replacing the lower unit bolts, they be dipped in "OMC Sealer". What would be a readily available equivalent?

Finally, when you remove the lower unit to perform the impeller replacement, is the lower unit lube sealed within the unit? In other words, if I don't drain the lower unit first, will I end up with a big mess when I remove it?

As always, thanks much.

Cheers,

Brew

Brew.... The lower unit is sealed, no lube will drain out, you will not have a mess.

Sealers..... Use what the engine calls for. I don't know what the item is that you speak of (Gasket Maker) but I suggest you avoid it. The following items can be purchased at you favorite auto parts store and are identical to the OMC products.

To be used on any gasket that exists between the water pump impeller plate and the lower unit: Gasket Sealer (the type that comes in a can that has a small brush in its screw off cap).

To be used between the water pump housing and the impeller plate, and also between the lower unit surface and the exhaust housing (metal to metal contact): Sealer 1000 or OMC Adhesive (same substance) should be used on any metal to metal or metal to plastic surface (such as impeller hsg to plate). Sealer 1000 may also be found in other brand names such as "Boat Armor" but the name of Sealer 1000 will always be mentioned on the tube.

Apply grease to the water tube grommet and to the driveshaft splines before assembling the unit to the engine. Be sure to install that top driveshaft "O" Ring.

Brew - Your manual covers this but be sure that you put the impeller in the housing before putting it over and down the driveshaft. I say this as I fought mine this spring for a good bit before going back to the manual. I also replaced the two large rubber gaskets on the exhaust tube while I was at it. Be careful to install the two rubber o rings. One goes just below the splines on the top of the driveshaft and the other goes, I think, just below the impeller. Double check with the manual.
