I recently acquired a 1964 Evinrude 5.5 HP outboard. As a precaution, it was recommended that I replace the water impeller. I just received a new one, but was wondering if there were any tips on replacement (it did not come with any instructions).

The best advice you will ever receive is to get a manual for your specific motor. Preferably an OEM one. It will set you back about 60.00 but that is only one hour of labor in a shop. It also will have little tips and shortcuts for you. If you don't want to spend that kind of money then at least go to the library and check out their Seloc or Haynes manual that covers your engine.

You have to pull the powerhead to disconnect the shift rod before you can get the lower unit off to replace the water pump. When you get the powerhead off, you will find a carbon seal with a spring under it. Pay particular attention to how it goes. When you put it back together, replace the 303355 cork-like gasket on the seal plate, and the 303347 o-ring in the carbon seal. It is VITAL that you do that. You will also need a new powerhead gasket. Glue the 303355 to the plate with some gasket cement.

You can just replace the impeller or you could change the entire pump with kit #0391391. The impeller and housing in this kit is a different more rigid design than the original 2.25" impeller in the metal housing. I just changed mine and it is night and day, the difference in water that comes spewing out the little exhaust hole.

FR is right. Change the cork gasket that seals the crankcase. It is only about a $2.29 part I think and it will protect your crankcase for years to come. There is also a little pin at the top of the crankcase (it holds up all that stuff FR told you to ensure you know the order of, when you remove it) that you will have to pull out to take off/put on the water pump.

It sounds much more difficult than it is. Good luck.

Actually, you don't have to remove the pin. Just pull the shaft out of the gearcase and feed the parts on from that end.
