Impeller Replacement Question

I'm replacing the water pump impeller on my 1994 25 hp Yamaha outboard. I watched a video on YouTube (so now I'm an expert--) and they mentioned greasing the drive shaft. Does anyone know what type of grease should be used?

Also, I'm going to change the lower unit oil. The NAPA parts store has a generic lower unit oil. Is this stuff OK to use?

Thanks for the help.

Re: Impeller Replacement Question

Just a good quality marine grease, be careful not to put any grease on top(end, meaning the horizontal end if standing up) this confuses
people, i'm saying on a pencil it would be the flat part of the eraser that you could stand it up on...got it? No grease there.
No, don't use any generic foot oil, you only change this once a year so get the good stuff.

Thanks for the advise. I'll go to town and get the good stuff.

Also, why no grease on the top of the drive shaft? The video made that point, too.

Re: Impeller Replacement Question

Just some grease on the splines.... no big gob on top of drive shaft that may create a "grease suction" on top of drive shaft, making it difficult to remove next time. Waterproof Marine Grease is fine, but I prefer the Quicksilver 2-4-C Marine Grease....a 6 ounce tube could last you a lifetime, and it's Very waterproof!
