OK...I admit I really don't know jack when it comes to these, but what's the advantage or should I say necessity to replace the entire pump when doing a maintenance replacement of the impeller?

Isn't the impeller a plastic piece so if it wears, it's going to be the part that wears, not the metal pump housing? Granted, I'd be cleaning up the housing if I didn't replace it. Or does the housing get grooves in it?

I honestly don't quite understand why the impeller itself needs to be changed out unless you're running it through sand type of conditions which would be pretty abrasive.

The impeller is made of rubber and it wears down the vanes. If your pump has the stainless steel liner in it, you usually just replace the impeller as a matter of maintaince.

Some of the housing bodies do take a beating.......... If your water pump is working then just do the impellar and make the housing decision once you have it apart.

The impellar is rubber....... it wears and ends up becoming brittle. They also pick up "memory" and some of the wings do not expand and stay bent.

I would change it. I change the impellar in every used engine I ever get along with changing the lower unit gear oil.
