Impeller replacement - where to start?

Hi, my boat ran to shallow sand/rocky bar yesterday (at low speed). I quickly moved it out and it ran with good tale-tell/peeing water for the rest of the afternoon. I took it home and flushed it with fresh water on the muffs and it peed quite well too. I tried it again today and it didn't pee at all. Is it the impeller or is there something else I need to check?

My motor is a yamaha 2 stroke 2006 40HP Australian model (model name: 40XWT with only 2 cylinders)

Anyone know of this motor? If I need to replace the impeller, what do I need to do to remove the lower unit and replace the impeller? Also what tool do I need to get the job done? I have not done this before but I am a good learner.

Thanks for all the help!

most likly your ok,
blow back through the tell tale.
its most likly clogged with a bit of sand.
if your gonna try the impeller buy a service manual first.
pictures can be priceless.

Thanks Rodbolt, will try to blow back through the tell-tale (with my mouth) as I don't have an air compressor :)

The reason I suspected the impeller is because I usually felt strong turbulence of warm water coming out at/near the propeller when the tell-tale water was working. Now there is no tell-tale and it's not as trong turbulence and it's not as warm either.

you can use about any compressed source, carb cleaner, the compressed air you use to clean your keyboard almost anything, sometimes it will clog at the nipple on the exhaust cover too.

Well, you are right again rodbolt. After giving it a few blows and dropped it down in a big container with water in it. It started peeing again and even a lot stronger than when it was on the muffs before.

I will still replace the impeller sometime soon as a routine maint. I checked with a local mechanic who have worked a lot on outboards. He quoted $150 for labor cost and $35 for the cost of a replacement impeller. Does it sound very reasonable?

I dont know the prevailing labor rates there. here it would be about an hour to 1.5 hours depending on bolt removal difficulty, kits is about 40 dollars.
