It's Sunday and I started to replace the impeller on an 85' 40hp. just purchased. I have had four other johnsons and it's always been a piece of cake to replace the impellers, 20 min. max.. I haven't purchaced a manual yet but, it almost looks like I have to disassemble the front of the engine in order to release the shift rod. What am I missing?

Re: impeller replacement

I assume you're referring to disconnecting the shift rod. No, there's no need to dismantle the front of the engine.

There's a 3/8" hex head shoulder type bolt under and in back of the bottom carburetor that attaches the shift clevis linkage to the shift rod.

This bolt is removed/installed on the port side. Have the shift in reverse, then access that *&^%$&* bolt using a 1/4" drive universal 3/8" socket and long extension. Use what is called a flexible Mechanics Finger Tool to grab that bolt to install/remove it.

Note that the measurement of the shift rod is extremely critical...... so be careful not to turn it one way or the other after you remove the lower unit.

No need to remove a thing from the front of motor. The hex bolt is acessable from the port side of the motor. I use a 3/8-10 inch long extension with a universal at end. To re-assemble I wrap black electrical tape around bolt and socket. Sometimes a good stiff clothes hanger straightned out helps move shift rod to alignment with bolt. Good Luck!
