Hey folks,

Trying to help a fellow boater that doesn't have computer savy. He's got a an OMC (not my gig, I'm Merc guy) stringer drive. Numbers on the drive are Model #983486 , and Ser# 400897. The numbers on the engine are 3825TMCOM and J835757. The question is, ...is the impeller replacement a "do it your self job" with the proper manual or a shop job. He's a first time boat owner and I just don't know about OMC's enough to help him.

I'm on the fence on what to advise... It's certainly doable. A bit of a pain - get a SELOC or factory manual or both.
The drive needs to come off which means cables need to be undone and redone to the shift control box.
Then the upper needs to come up which is fairly easy when the top cover is off the exaust housing etc...
The pump needs to be inspected for a cracked hsg due to rain water freezing, then you'll know what kit to order.
Watch when you take the w/p apart... you'll be panicking if you get the orientation out of whack... but in reality it can't be assembled wrong wthout a struggle... the bolt holes are offset to make it sort of apprentice-proof....
You need the recommended permatex sealant for the bolts and surfaces, and get some vaseline for the impeller blades... and some mercruiser spline grease or Castrol pyroplex blue for the waterpump shaft splines...don't forget the little spline seal coggy ring rubber thing- keeps the grease in and water out.
I think it's a good idea when doing one of these w/p's to drop the brg hsg. out of the upper and flush the dirty lube out that tends to hang around the bottom of the upper... but not part of a w/p job... it's just that you're right there.... and the drain plug isn't really at the bottom of that hsg.

If it's a Cobra drive, the replacement is fairly simple from what I've heard.

Like Hystat said, your question is subjective. Nothing personal. We don't know his our your capabilities. I've had my Stringer apart a couple of times without any difficulty. On the other hand, we have tried to help several who just didn't get it.

I think I may have been one of those the first try too.. haha

the drive number provided is for a Stringer 400 series, yet i believe the 38.... number means 3.8 V6 which means it's possibly the wrong outdrive on the boat...doesn't affect the w/p change, but that outdrive won't last very long behind a V6 engine.. OR, the upper housing might be from a 400 and was used in a rebuild with V6 gear ratios in which case it should be fine....but I would count the splines on the lower unit - 13 spline prop is 400 series - for 4 cylinder engines only, 15 splines and you're good to go!
