AQ125A seawater pump impeller needs replaced.I cant seem to get it out.I didn't try too hard because I didn't want to force it until finding out how I should go about pulling it out.I'm thinking it should slide right out off the shaft and is held in place with a shaft key.Any help would be great!

Re: Impeller troubles

They are usually a little tight, and the key only keeps it from spinning on the shaft, and doesn't really help hold the impeller on the shaft.
You can usually use a couple of blade type screwdrivers to pry the impellers out, but be carefull and don't damage the housing.

Re: Impeller troubles

I have had to dremmel an impeller off before.Usually the first time I change the impeller on a boat that I just bought.I have had 3 boats with o/ds and have had to dremmel three times.Actually 2 times....I used a chisel once.I always put some white marine grease on the key and shaft when changing it .Charlie

Re: Impeller troubles

Do you mean you use a dremmel to cut it from the shaft? If so do I just cut into the impeller without getting too close to the pump shaft and then rip the rest of the way thru with my hands or plyers?

Charlie's been working on Different drives than Your's,.........
Do like Don said,.. Or possibly a pair of Pliers,..or Vise-Grips Maybe,..??..

You Shouldn't need a dremel........
If a dremel Is used,... It's to Cut the Metal Ring that the rubber is bonded to..... It's Not Rubber that's stuck,... It's the Metal Collar.......
If so do I just cut into the impeller without getting too close to the pump shaft
No,... You Cut thru the Metal Collar to within 2 or 3 Thousandths of an Inch, from the Shaft...........
Then hit it with a Chisel..............

Trebor,I wasnt suggesting that you use a dremmel.I was simply sharing an experience with you, though if you are left with no other options and the impeller is still stuck in place you may have to do it that way.As Bondo stated,I am referring to the impeller on an alpha drive.Yours is in a Sea water pick up pump.Charlie

Re: Impeller troubles

I just got back from the boat. The impeller change went good.I had a little trouble lining the slot in the shaft up and keeping the impeller on the key at the same time.I figure the job would have been easier if I were able to see inside the pump housing. My engine sits inside 50% of the motor cover. If you understand what I mean than you know its like working in a hole.I could get to it but it was a pain! The old impeller was pretty chewed up.It seems like something went thru and sliced thru all of the veins.Any way I just wanted to thank all of you that helped.I am very greatful.
