I have a 1971 Chrysler 55HP. I am sealing the LU. I received my impeller. It seems that I would have to bend the impeller wings to fit the housing over it. Is this normal or do I have the wrong Impeller? Should the housing fit over the impeller without having to bend the wings. If I dont bend the wings there is no way I would be able to get the housing over it.

That is normal, Noah. I can't tell you if you have the right impeller, but they all must bend the leaves to work at all.

This is my first time doing a LU. Was just afraid it might be wrong since it did not fit in smoothly. But it will fit with the leaves bent slightly. The higher ranking people on this forum (several) told me this was the part number. Guess I just wanted to be sure. Again thanks to you and the rest of this forum

Re: Impeller

Look at the old impeller and observe the direction of bend in the vanes. Coat the new impeller with liquid dish soap such as ivory. After the backing plate and impeller are installed on the shaft. Push the housing onto the impeller while rotating it in the direction that you want the vanes to curve.;)

Don't forget to use some sort of anti sieze on the bolts when you re-install them and DONT torque them too much. Remember, they are steel and the lower is aluminum. Guess which gives first when you torque them too much.

Regards,

John
