I have a 1971 55HP Chrylser. I recently changed impeller and it worked fine. Last night I got drunk (stupid) and decide to decarb motor. This morning I noticed no water in tub. ? Did I run without water? Yep. Well I started and it started well and fast. But no water circulation. I removed LU and impeller was in pieces. I had an old one that looks fine to the eye. I put that on and stll no circulation. Can an impeller look good yet not work? It looks fine like I said, but again no circulation. I checked for pieces for blockage but found none. So I ask again, Can an impeller look good to the eye but not circulate water?

Re: Impeller

Were you able to find all the pieces to the impeller you smoked? If not it could be stuck in a bad place. Either way you are going to want a new impeller. When you put the old one back in was the impeller key in place?

Re: Impeller

Hi Euro
When I first got the motor no water circulated. I purchased a new impeller. When I rmoved the LU I noticed it had no pin and the impeller looked good. I put in the new impeller anyway with the pin. Now that I screwed up the new one I put back the other one with the pin. But, no water circulated. I tried blowing thru the hose that connect to the thermo And you could feel the air coming from the tube that connects to the water pump housing. So I am thinking that that end is clear. I have to check the pipe that the water get sucked in from this weekend. Hopefully thats clog. But if the impeller has all vanes and looks good, it should work, right? I did remove again to make sure the pin was still in and it was.

Re: Impeller

The impeller could be week and bend too easy in the pump. I think it would pump water just not as much as a new one. For 18 bucks I would just get a new one and get a 6 vane instead of a 10 vane. I think they work better.

Re: Impeller

noah, i'm no expert but i changed my impeller last year & the old one looked pretty good. except, the fins on the old one were a little bent opposite the direction that it spins..so i would say Yes, impellers could look good but may not have the firmness to work well. but again, ck w/ someone that knows for sure.

Re: Impeller

The impeller seems firm and goes in snug. I will check for blockaged this weekend, if I find none I will change impeller. (sober)

Re: Impeller

Hi Euro And Kirk, Thanks, I replaced the impeller and it works great. I now know that an impeller can look good, but indeed be bad. I also took your advice Euro. Last time I used an impeller with 10 vanes and now I replaced it with a 6 vane impeller. And you can see the big difference in the amount of water circutating, and coming out of the snout. Thanks again.
