I have an 1980 140hp johnson which I bought about 10 yrs. ago I posted on here a few weeks ago regarding the impeller (replacing), the consences was to replace it as it has never been replaced since I've owned it. Well yesterday I finally replaced it. I was pleasently surprised when I found that the impeller didn't look bad at all. The only difference was the new impeller seemed to be a bit stiffer,in that I really had to push it into its housing whereas the old one almost slipped out. Tested the boat today and everything went good, engine pumped water like it always had, didn't bother to take the hood off to feel the heads, I figured why bother!. Now the question I'd like answered is, there is a bushing in the center of the impeller, now has anyone had a problem where the impeller has actually spun on this bushing, if so would this cause less water from going into the pwrhead causing over heating. Does this scenerio happen very often, I'm just curious!

Re: impeller

Yep the impellers can become detached from the bushing ... then they don't pump properly if at all!
Happens in inboard engines too but depends on the type of drive. Some just have that rotten key others (older?) have a pin right through the impeller and shaft

The difference you noted in the stiffness of the new impeller was probably a good enough reason to fit a new one.
