I just had a question about my impeller. I had the boat in the water yesterday, an 89 evinrude 150 v6, and had my overheat alarm going off after running for awhile. I was very disgusted so I did not do the necessary checks. I do know that my motor has a safety feature that shuts the motor down to 2500 rpms when it over heats, and that did not happen. When I run the motor in the yard, which I do every time before I go out, I have no problems with water flow. I was curious if the boot forces water into the impeller, or if the impeller is actually doing its job? I am begining to think that the alarm was a malfunction, I have a feeling that it has not been checked or changed in some time.

Re: Impeller

Impellers should be replaced regularly. 2 to 3 years Yes they can last longer, but you risk a potential break down. Just because you get cooling from the hose does not mean you get enough volume to cool the enine properly. If it persists get a infared thermometer to check engine temp. then you will know if you have a alarm malfunction.
