Re: impeller

I will tell this in a number form :)

1. remove the lower unit, unscrew all bolts holding it on and it should drop if it does not give it a good WACK!

2. remove impellor housing and impellor

3. place new impellor and new impellor key in

5 reasimble

SORRY

Re: impeller

Fleur,

It's a little complicated. A manual (picture) is worth a thousand words.

Anyway, I'll give it a shot.

1. Purchase a water pump kit.

2. Remove the bolts from the lower unit. There are four or five that point up.

2. Disconnect the shift linkage. You can do this before #2 if you prefer. My memory gets a bit fuzzy here. I BELIEVE there is a plate on the side of the exhaust housing. It's sort of oval in shape. It is held on by two screws. Behind this plate is the shift linkage disconnect. Loosen the top screw on the clamp of the linkage.

3. Remove the old pump. It sits on top of the lower unit.

4. Replace the new pump parts in the reverse order that you removed the old ones. If you have a camera-take pictures as you go along.

Re: impeller

thank you Sloopy and don't be sorry.
say Djohns, are talking about the shift linkage that comes from the steering to the motor?
at the motor i have to disconnect it to open my cowl, is that what you mean thats the only shift linkage i have seen. and are you saying i need a whole kit? i thought I just need the little plastic impeller , see i'm very new to all this

Re: impeller

I just replaced my water pump on my 58 evinrude, and I am sure its the same sequence or setup

You have shift linkage that goes along the bottom shaft all the way to the propellar. All the gears are down there. There is a rectangle with rounded corners with two screws in it on the side of the long piece between the motor and the propellar. The long piece is called the exhaust housing. The rounded rectangle is on the exhaust housing. Inside this cover is two bolts, I forget the size 7/16" I believe or one size smaller. loosen the bottom bolt.

Now there is 4 bolts above the propeller that you will need to remove with a 7/16" socket, and a large bolt that you will need to remove with a 9/16 socket. The 4 bolts are facing downwards to the ground, the larg bolt the head is facing towards the motor.

once those are removed, now you can pull out the lower unit. There is 3 screws holding the water pump housing on the drive shaft(the longest shaft). Your impeller is in there. Remove it, clean the inside of the housing and put your new one in. Assemble the lower unit in the reverse.

I would recommend a manual for your motor. It is a pain in the butt to get the lower unit back on you need to line up the water tube, gear linkage, and the drive shaft to get in correctly. It would be wise to have someone helping you out.

Fleur,

There is another shift linkage connection inside the leg of the engine.

I recommend a kit. The seals, o'rings and gaskets are probably the same age as the engine.

Re: impeller

Here's how I fixed mine.

1) Get beer from fridge
2) Go outside look at lower unit and say "Yep.
need to fix that"
3) Finish Beer
4) Go back inside and wait for manual.

I would suggest having the manual there with you. It's much easier than working on it "on the fly". I just replaced my first one and it was fairly simple. Good luck

Re: impeller

I agree with Jumper on both suggestions. I got a seloc manual and it was very helpful. It gave some warnings about other models where a screw may be stripped out and other suggestions. It also gave me a parts diagram that made sure I put everything back in place right and let me see what seals I should order before I started the work. The picture was also clearer than the scratched up microfiche that my dealer had.

Re: impeller

Would these same steps apply to a 61 evinrude lark III 40 hp long shaft modified ? mine kinda dribbles out <<< hose is tight is this a sign i'll be needing a water pump kit or is it because it has to travel 20 inches from the long shaft being installed?
