Impellor change - Merc or GLM?

Ill probably be changing the impellor this winter in my Alpha 1 Gen 2 drive as the one thats in there will have done 3 seasons.

I have a GLM impellor in my cellar but Ive heard that GLM had some bad press in the exhaust manifold and riser dept.

Anyone know of any quality issues with GLM impellors?

Should I get a Merc / Quicksilver one and use that?

Howdy,

If I had an after market impeller in my hand, I would use it.

But keep a spare too.....:D

I use Mercruiser OEM for everything critical, and impeller qualifies.:)

I went through a long/expensive troubleshoot process to find out that my overheating was caused by a Sierra brand impeller (Alpha Gen I). I am waiting to hear back from them, on my warranty claim.
The rubber was much harder than Mercury's, and the vanes took more of a set after only a few months.
The impeller is quite critical, and for me very expensive to change mid-season.

I reckon you're right. Ill buy an original Mercruiser part and it willbe worthit for the peace of mind.

I'd like to think I'd get 3 seasons out of an impellor, if the GLM packs up in May one year, it costs me too a shed load of money to get the boat out of the water to change it.

Thanks, guys. Decision made.

Yep, I'll only use Merc for now on........my issue was real nasty.......Sierra impeller must have been pumping just a little too less to keep my engine cool at higher rpm's.......was almost the last thing I suspected, and thus lots of $$ and hours to troubleshoot. :(

i'm with stoneyloam. i try and use merc parts if i can for all repairs. including impeller replacement.
i go inspect my impeller ea. year, per the s/m. each year the impeller looks to have degraded some. granted. like i said in op. i just can't seem to go a season w/o a mind lapse and doing a dry start.

these are pics of the last three years of impellers... ea. being new at the beginning of the season..

all have taken a set w/curl

IMG_5859.jpg

this one had low water pressure on the hose and caused a minor overheat from last year. problaby ran for several min. w/low pressure..
the others probably had about the same mistreatment i gave the one i'm running now. a 10-15 sec. dry start...

once again, i'm running on borrowed time for a giving it a dry start. i do replace them yearly. they just seem fragile...

i just wish i could get through 1 season w/o abusing my impeller....:( looks like i'm not the only one though. didn't figure i was... misery loves company??? http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=427193
