i am changing out a merc 302 with a ford 302 from a truck. everyone keeps telling me how important it is to put in brass freeze plugs but no one has told me why. is this a pressure issue or simply because of corosion? i only plan on running this motor for 1 or 2 summers in lake water. will steel plugs last that long?

With as easy as it is to install brass freeze plug with the engine out, and as hard as it will be to replace 1 of them with the engine installed,,, I wouldn't even consider running steel plugs.

They might, but you'd feel real dumb having one blow out 4th of July weekend 'cause you saved $7 this year....
